The Stone Soup

As told by Rainb0w at Deadmen Tales. Based on the original Portuguese tale and it is about the ingenuity of hunger.

Lasagna, fried eggs with potatoes, salad, roast chicken, salmon, strawberries..What's your favorite meal?

A friar who was collecting money arrived tired and hungry at the house of some peasants. The friar asked them for something but the peasants didn't even ask him to eat. Then the friar told them he would prepare a stone soup.

The peasants laughed at him but the friar, who was very astute, told them this soup was an exquisite dish. He took a large stone and asked: "Can you give me a pot?" "Of course", they answered. The friar threw a good deal of water into it, put the stone at the bottom and asked: "Can I put the pot on the fire?"The peasants agreed.

After a while the friar uncovered the pot and put on a frightened look. The peasants asked him what was going on and he told them: "This soup is tasteless, it needs a cabbage and a little salt". The peasants gave him everything. But after a short time the friar again tested the soup and said it needed sausage. The peasants gave it to him and the friar put it in the pot.

And then he said: "Now it's ready!" And he ate the soup in a flash. "But what are you going to do with the stone?", asked the peasants, rather concerned. "It still has some substance so I will save it for the next soup", answered the friar.

THE MORAL OF THE TALE: If you find yourself in a predicament, try to crank up your imagination: it can save you.
