Whither the Civil War amongst the Region's Natives
Our Intrepid Senior Author offers the First in his series of finding the story and how it might affect our Beloved Readers.
The poor savage lost soules who roameth these islands when Our Lord blesseth them with His Word, art now apparently going to war against each other. We witness this, concerned for our families, our crops, and businesses, not knowing the outcome and consequences of this tribal clash.
What do we know of the tribes that live among us?
Aside from some scattered fugitives roaming our lands, two tribes can be defined as "native" and apparently sedentary. Here is what we know about them.
The Poukai of Bounty, like their homeland, are secluded and shy. Hard to reach, they live almost invisible to civilized people. Nonetheless their society seems structured and relatively advanced, as are their religious beliefs and rituals.
The Poukai appear to have a matriarchal society, the highest position being held by women.
Skillful warriors, they seem to disregard agriculture and survive mostly on the fishing activities of their members.
The Kaiabi of Barbados are at first sight more primitive but also more open to the pleasures and comforts of civilization. They have a simpler hierarchical structure and, more than a religion, the Kaiabi seem to have a mythology, involving chickens, which they call their ancestors.
The Kaiabi compensate for the lack of organization with a highly developed instinct for commerce, tied to their farming. Renowned are their pastries, rum, and honey. Very aware of the currency systems, they have proven on multiple occasions to be ruthless negotiators.
The two tribes couldn't be more different. Where one is advanced the other lacks and vice versa. The prospect of a fracture of the high council of the natives is going to cause damage on both sides and our people shall be caught in the middle.
Be watchful sailors, fishermen, and farmers.
I remain your humble servant,
Mr. Kinch Villard, Esq.
Next week Mr. Villard offers a more in depth account of the events that have led to this impasse, along with the perspective of the Chiefs.
